Why are Polysaccharides Important?

The field of glycobiology (the study of the biology, biosynthesis, and structure of carbohydrates, saccharides, or sugars) shows us that the process of glycosylation (i.e., the reaction in which a polysaccharide (carbohydrate or sugar) is attached to a protein or fat to form what is called a glycoconjugate) is a very important function in our cells. These glycoconjugates are bioactive compounds that help to guide the way many of our cells function. The cells use these glycoconjugates for many different purposes, including to help regulate our immune system’s function and activity and for cells to communicate with one another. If we do not provide our cells with the needed amounts of polysaccharides in the diet to execute these basic functions, then we are not living optimally. 

The body is smart enough to take other, common simple sugars, like glucose and fructose, which are typically eaten too often, and transform them into the required polysaccharides needed for glycosylation, but this appears to be an inefficient way to enable our cells to function properly.

Summary of Polysaccharide Research

Polysaccharides (sugars with a complex biochemical structure) constitute a class of nutrients that are important for health.  Most importantly, during the second major step of biosynthesis in all cells, nine molecules of mannose, a key polysaccharide found in BiAloe® in Daily Brain Care, are required in the endoplasmic reticulum to initiate the assembly of glycoproteins and glycolipids.  This process demonstrates that polysaccharides are used for glycosylation (i.e., the addition of saccharides to amino acid chains or free fatty acid chains) in the endoplasmic reticulum and the Golgi.  The significance of the coding capacity of polysaccharides in glycoproteins and glycolipids is documented in a series of review articles in Acta Anatomica (Denker, 1998).  The addition of nine molecules of mannose in three chains in the endoplasmic reticulum constitutes the establishment of a domain on which instructions for life processes are transmitted between cells.  In the Golgi, other polysaccharides are added, and the number of mannose units is modified to provide a code of information for conducting host defense, repair, growth, healing, and homeostasis.  This domain is the principal site for coordinating activities for the trillions of cells that make up the human body.

This fundamental supporting biochemistry is why supplying polysaccharides from food sources results in a broad spectrum of health-supporting benefits.  Additionally, concentrated levels of polysaccharides in dietary supplements, like Daily Brain Care, compared to their levels in foods, take advantage of how a concentrated amount of nutrients allows a greater number of bioactive compounds to be created.

As mentioned above, BiAloe® is a very potent aloe polysaccharide, called acemannan or mannose, that has been shown to support the natural biochemical mechanisms of antiviral cells (Kahlon et al., 1991).  In humans, acemannan also supports cell processes that are:  antibacterial, anti-neoplastic, wound healing, intracellular stabilizing, rebalancing and adaptative for stressed cells, and able to increase the synthesis of reduced-glutathione, the principal intracellular antioxidant and multi-systems balancing compound (Dykman & Dykman, 1998; Everson et al., 1992; Kalebic et al., 1991; Lefkowitz et al., 2000; McDaniel, 1987, 1990; McDaniel et al., 2006).  Aloe vera extracts also have fractions with unique molecular and pharmacological profiles, e.g., one fraction displayed hematopoietic activity, while another fraction displayed anti-inflammatory activity, i.e., down-regulation of iNOS and TNF (Kim et al., 1999).

Summary of Memory-Related Research

Neurodegenerative disorders are rampant today, they are increasing, and they are not effectively treated by conventional medicine.  The United States currently has approximately 14 million Americans with some type of dementia and about 6 million of those have Alzheimer’s.  Alzheimer’s is currently the 6th leading killer of Americans, has no known preventative strategy, and conventional medicine can do virtually nothing but delay the inevitable decline for a few months with the five FDA-approved medications for dementia.  In addition, Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis are the two other leading neurodegenerative disorders affecting millions more Americans.

Our lab conducted some very exciting research among a sample of people with moderate to severe memory disorder.  All subjects in the study had been diagnosed with the disorder for a minimum of one year and for an average of about 3 years, and we assessed their cognitive function at baseline and every 3 months for 12 months.  Also, we drew their blood to assess immune system functioning and markers of inflammation.  We wanted to assess the relationships between immune function and cognition over the course of the study.  Each subject took 4 scoops per day of Daily Brain Care for the entire 12 months of the study.

What we discovered at the end of the study was nothing short of remarkable.  Our team demonstrated in memory disorder patients perhaps for the first time: (1) significant and sustained improvements in cognitive function over a one-year period; (2) a significant improvement in overall immune function; (3) a significant improvement in inflammatory status, which may lead to reduced neuroinflammation; (4) a significant increase in the production of stem cells, which may lead to repair of affected neuronal areas; and (5) a correlation between clinical (cognitive) and physiological (immune) function (Lewis et al., 2013)!  Our results were truly astounding, and to date they have not been exceeded by any nutritional or pharmaceutical product.  Additionally, I want to be clear that the study demonstrates the power and capability of nutrition.  We did NOT treat, cure, manage, or mitigate disease, but we showed the ability of the body to repair and regenerate itself when given the proper raw materials (i.e., nutrients) to do so.  This is the power of nutrition and is part of a fundamental principle that says that supplying the body the nutrients it needs that are typically missing in the diet today will allow the body to heal itself. How Does Daily Brain Care Compare to Other Brain Health Supplements and Medications for Memory Problems?

Daily Brain Care has a distinct competitive advantage as the best brain health supplement over the rest of the products in the brain health or nootropic space in the dietary supplement industry:  a 12-month clinical trial that was conducted in patients with a memory disorder and cognitive dysfunction showing clinically and statistically significant improvements in cognition and immune functioning without significant side effects.  To our knowledge, no other product can match our levels of effectiveness according to the results of our findings (Lewis et al., 2013; Martin et al., 2017; Stillman et al., 2019)!

Nonetheless, quite a few other studies in cognitive functioning have been conducted on two dietary compounds:  Gingko biloba and vitamin E.  For example, a meta-analysis among studies of Alzheimer's patients taking 120 to 240 mg of Gingko biloba for 3- to 6-month treatment periods revealed a small though statistically significant effect on objective measures of cognitive function (Oken et al., 1998).  However, a study by Solomon et al. (2002) revealed that Gingko biloba, when taken following manufacturer’s instructions, had no beneficial effect on memory and related mental functions in 230 physically and mentally healthy adults over the age of 60.  While central nervous system oxidative stress has been theorized as a possible cause for Alzheimer's and dementia, researchers have found protective effects of vitamins E and C against cognitive decline (Paleologos et al., 1998; Perrig et al., 1997).  Others found that 2,000 IU of vitamin E slowed the progression of moderately severe Alzheimer's in a group of patients, but no changes in cognitive functioning were found (Sano et al., 1997).

Meanwhile, five FDA-approved medications are prescribed for dementia and Alzheimer's patients.  Although Daily Brain Care is a dietary supplement and not regulated by the FDA as a drug, it might be useful to mention these compounds as competitors.  For the early to moderate stages of Alzheimer's, the cholinesterase inhibitors are used:  Aricept (donepezil), Exelon (rivastigmine), and Razadyne (galantamine).  These drugs are used to treat symptoms related to cognitive functioning, may help delay symptoms or slow them from worsening for a limited time, are not particularly efficacious, and as with all drugs have significant side effects.  For moderate to severe stages of Alzheimer's, Namenda (memantine), Aricept (donepezil), and Namzaric (a combination of Namenda and Aricept) are the drugs prescribed, with Namenda being the most common.  Namenda might temporarily improve some aspects of cognitive functioning, but will decline in efficacy over time and also has significant adverse effects.
